Choosing Your Cut
Cut Selection
When looking at the wide variety of chewing tobacco, you might be unable to
decide which cut is best for you. Long Cut is a cut that is easier to pack and
pinch. It also stays together in your mouth better. Fine Cut or Snuff is finely
ground tobacco that is much harder to pinch but covers a bigger surface area in
you mouth. If you are new to dipping I suggest you start out with Long Cut until
you get the hang of pinching and loading a dip in your mouth.
Packing
Packing is a way to get your tobacco prepared so it is easier to pinch. To pack
your can of dip, make a letter 'C'
with your middle finger and thumb. Grasp the tin of chew with your middle finger
and thumb so that the seal between the body and lid and of the tin are
completely covered by those fingers. Use firm pressure. Make sure the top lid is
faced upwards so you can see it.
Holding the tin at stomach level in front of you, bend your wrist so that your
palm is facing your body.
Rotate your wrist so that the space between your middle finger and thumb are
pointing up and towards the ceiling. Begin Packing: quickly rotate your hand
back down to the original starting position.
Repeat as often as necessary. Occasionally open the tin and inspect the contents
to check that the tobacco is packed well. When you get good at this, 3 or 4
packs should be plenty.

Tips and Tricks for Chew
1. Before even putting in your chew, make sure you have some place to spit,
whether it be on the ground or in a bottle. Before opening the can make sure it
is packed tightly. Don't pack for more than ten seconds. Next, pull out a dip
pinch firmly to even more hand-pack your dip. Don't get too much. If you pull
out a dip with excess on the sides shave it off with you free hand.
2. Making the loud snapping noise when packing the tin is by learning how to
maintain tension with your thumb and middle finger while allowing your index
finger to remain loose. A whip-like effect is produced when you suddenly stop
the rotation of your wrist when snapping the tin down.
3. Do not allow your elbow to move when first learning to pack. Your wrist
movement is the most important part of packing. When you have it down, you can
include your whole arm in the motion, which will improve your packing.
Why Do So Many Baseball Players Chew Tobacco?
Even in the mid-19th century, chewing tobacco was hugely popular in the US. Many
ballplayers likely chewed on tobacco for the same reasons as other Americans,
but they soon discovered the benefits. It produces saliva and lubricates the
ball players mouth in the dusty infield. When fielding gloves became popular in
the 1870s and 1880s, players moistened the leather with spit. Pitchers used the
juice from a chaw to prepare the famous spitball, which was permitted until
1920.
